Can we take a minute to appreciate the beauty and history in this blonde wood kitchen full of pristine, museum-quality appliances not to mention a fabulous pink porcelain drainboard sink. This unused 1962 kitchen includes a pink General Electric combination wall mount refrigerator, a pink GE automatic electric built-In oven, a pink GE cooktop, a pink GE dishwasher, and a pink cast iron double bowl sink.

Who or what has influenced your style?

Design, as I have experienced it, is largely a collaborative experience. Style seems to me to be the result of solving design problems elegantly, and if that is a collaborative exercise, I would say that my peers have influenced me most.

What designer of the past or present do you admire most?

Whilst studying a tutor referred me to the work of Geoffrey Bawa. Though his focus is design for tropical environments, there are some valuable lessons in his work that can be applied in the Brisbane context. His work is also beautiful to look at...

What are you excited about right now in the world of design?

The opportunities that the sustainability crisis presents, and the shift towards warmer incarnations of minimalism.

phorm interiors' latest work::cinco bistro

The original interior at Cinco Bistro was completed by Phorm Interiors in April 2007.

When chef/owner, Peter Stubbs, acquired the tenancy next door, Phorm Interiors were once again commissioned to take on the design of the new space, incorporating a dining area, wine storage, new open plan kitchen and a stunning new bar.

As with our original concept, bold print features heavily in the design - focussing on a customised printing of the Florence Broadhurst designed 'Spanish Plate'.

This is highlighted with a series of exciting natural materials: recycled hardwood detailing to the bar top and surrounds; a spectacular wall feature of recycled brickwork; a stunning wine cabinet feature with copper detailing and handmade Moroccan hexagonal tiles to the bar front.

The overall design layers patterns and textures together, creating a bold and interesting aesthetic.

When Phorm Interiors was presented with the opportunity of renovating one of the few terrace houses in inner-city Brisbane, the challenge was to create a comfortable living area, complete with storage options, kitchen, dining and sitting area within a 9 metre x 6 metre space.

The design was guided by a stunning collection of indigenous artifacts, from the clients previous life in Papua New Guinea. Highlighting these strong works with a series of finishes - American Walnut Veneers; Calacatta Marble; Japan-blacked American Oak - was the key to creating a bold new design.

Joinery consists of a series of Japan-black cabinetry. Hidden within the base of the cabinetry is a 'secret' panel that discreetly opens to reveal a television on a 90 degree axis.

The design is further developed with custom designed furniture; stunning hand-made green tiled splashback; tan leather custom covered Eames Wire Chairs & a Piazza San Marco Pendant Lamp by Vico Magistretti for O-Luce.

Watching the floods unfold felt surreal as we saw the devastation that was wreaked upon our city.

In previous years, Phorm Interiors has sent gifts and cards.

This year, we have instead decided to donate the christmas budget to 'The Australian National Academy of Music'.

The Australian National Academy of Music is the country's centre of excellence for music performance training. The Academy takes in from around Australia its most talented and highly trained young musicians, and sends out into the world artists with the musical skill, imagination and passion to make their voices heard.

Having consolidated its position in 2009, the Academy is now strongly placed to realise its vision of being one of the world's great music training academies.

In 2010 ANAM presented over 170 public events and performances.

It brought 61 international and Australian artists to South Melbourne to work with its 59 students and 15 members of the permanent Resident Faculty, in a training program that included over 2,500 individual lessons, 200 classes, and countless rehearsals and coaching sessions.

A donation to ANAM enables students to commence their ANAM journey by:

assisting interstate students in relocating to Melbourne; enabling the purchase of scores and sheet music for the music library; contributing to the 'Strings & Things' program, assisting in the maintenance of students' musical instruments.

When Brisbane gallerist, Jan Manton, decided to move her established gallery from South Brisbane to a newly acquired space in Spring Hill, Phorm Interiors were engaged to assist with this major transition.

The objective for the move was to create a more intimate setting to meet her clients, immersing them in a very personal gallerist-collector experience.

Following a trend that has proven very popular with the 'arterati' of New York & London, Jan Manton invites the collector into a gallery, that is also her own home, to view both an exhibition space and subsequent stock room, enabling a wonderful, relaxed encounter with an artwork.

The first floor gallery and main exhibition space serves as a showcase for exhibitions by an ever-changing roster of artists, including luminaries such as Imants Tillers, Juan Ford, Dadang Christano & Judith Wright.

Phorm Interiors has designed a series of movable screens that are used to both contain the current art exhibition and offer a glimpse of stockroom works, hung on a racking system cunningly tucked behind the moveable screens.

This clever amalgamation of exhibition and storage space offers a flexible, stunning, dual-purpose gallery. The long exhibition hallway gives way to a more intimate, private space, offering a unique opportunity to see the artwork as it would be, enhancing that walls of a home.

Experiencing works in this way will offer inspiration and insight to the discerning collector, and the budding collector seeking guidance and reassurance.

After a long time in planning and development, we took delivery (yesterday) of what i think is a mechanical modern marvel -'a work of art'.

This television mechanism will feature in one of four custom cabinets in our soon to be completed Petrie Terrace Residence project.

Of course once fitting is complete, the whole operation will be via a remote control device.

Cinco Bistro & (upcoming) Bar...well underway

Phorm Interiors recently started onsite works on Cinco Bistro's 'knock thru' reno/extensions that will include an intimate bar area, large wine display and added seating for regular fans (which includes myself) of Peter Stubbs cooking.

Some years ago Phorm Interiors were employed to update the interior of Cinco that included a smart upholstered wall (image above) in Florence Broadhurst fabric that provided a great sound proofing solution and a wonderfully, strong feature that has become a distinctive addition to the bistro's atmosphere.

We needed to add strength to the bottom NEW half of the area and have successfully done so with exotic hand-made tiles and iconic designer lighting over the bar.

NEW phorm studio :: blending original cottage with a clever fence idea

Our clever architects James and Melody from Atelier Chen Hung have sent through a prelimenary draft of our front fence.

We had to address this fence with great attention to detail given it's defining link between the streetscape of the orignal (almost 100 year old) cottage and the modern structure attached - 'in back'.

I think they have done a wonderful job...

The design of this inner city family home is about lifestyle...

The space is large, bright, refined and modern.

Huge custom sofas sit perfectly positioned in breezeways, a bespoke fireplace opens to reveal a home entertainment system. The decorative elements rely on the subtle differences in natural texture : dark timber flooring; woven sisal; natural linen; teak and Calacatta marble.

Artworks by Judith Wright (Between - 2007) and Jonathan Kimberley (Not My Garden: Map of Unlandscape - 2007) add depth to the monochromatic scheme.

'Deliberately minimising the palette of colours and materials ensures that the architectural features sit strong within the scheme' says Steven Stewart of Phorm Interiors.

This is evident in the stunning staircase - stepped in recycled teak; the 2097 Suspension Light (Gino Sarfatti - Flos) & custom lacquered wall panelling.

The overall outcome is relaxed and contemplative - an interior that links large rectangular spaces together, connecting the interior to the exterior.

Who or what has influenced your style?

Charlotte Russell: Elements of Japanese and Danish design have definitely been great influences in my style. The simple, clean lines and use of textures and timber are what I gravitate towards. I enjoy including these elements in any design.

Mark Nucifora: I have been influenced by a number of trends and styles; such as :- European styles (French glamour and Italian rustic). I also enjoy urban and industrial design and styles from Melbourne .au and New York.

What designer of the past and present do you admire most?

CR: Past - Frank Lloyd Wright (Fallingwater house) Present - New Zealand Architects, Daniel Marshall and Fearon Hay

What are you excited about right now in the world of design?

CR: The move away from strict minimalism. I still enjoy seeing simple, clean spaces but I like it when they have a sense of being 'lived in' and include a range of eclectic textures.

An emerging architectural and urban design practice, Atelier Chen Hung, was established by Melody Chen & James Hung.

Located in Brisbane, Australia, the talented duo have been influenced by the regional movement and their work continues to seek interpretation of place and locality in a new perspective.

What are the main determinants in the design process for you?

James Hung: The inspiration of the project always comes from the client's vision and their brief, and we go through the process of trying to extract/re-interpret this information to develop ideas.

Melody Chen: Every project has its specifics that we try to identify at the beginning. The specifics may be about the user, the site, the surrounding neighbourhood, or the planning codes. These bits and pieces of information then become generators of a core idea in the design process. It's like assembling jigsaw puzzles, except there is no preconceived final picture.

Do you think that architecture tends to be trendy today?

MC: Architecture, like other products of creativity, brilliant ideas are recognised and inevitably copied. Out designs are not trend driven, but we are open to influences from other fields, such as art and fashion.

JH: I think we like to be relevant, rather than following trends. Architecture that responds to certain conditions of a place and time is the type of architecture we want to make.

Do you think that architecture still has a role to play in finding a solution to low cost housing?

MC: Definitely, in fact more than ever. Australia is experiencing significant demographic changes and it's important that the built up environment responds to that. Architects' input in national housing counts around 3%. Its going to be an enormous task for new generations of architects to re-engage themselves in the design of mass housing in Australia.

JH: It's been difficult to get the message out to the general public that the cost of a house should include its' life cycle costs, such as energy consumption and maintenance. And the fact that Australian houses are one of the largest in the world in terms of floor area and really adds up to th cost of building each dwelling. It will be a challenge to convince the market that a reduced floor area with well designed spaces is actually a better living environment.

MC: Architects have been exploring alternative housing solutions, like pre-fabricated dwellings, kit homes and modified cargo containers for living. These will challenge peoples preconception of what a house is and looks like.

Is energy conservation still an important factor in your work? Do you think that people are still trained to respond to that?

MC: Absolutely! Thinking about energy efficiency has become second nature in our design process.

JH: By placing the building in the right orientation on site that opens up to sunlight and breeze, protected from harsh afternoon sun and cold winter winds, these are simple consideration that have always been embedded in the architectural education. A good design could have significant savings on the energy usage of cooling and heating for the lifetime of the building.

The Sands 'SkyPark' is an architectural masterpiece sitting on top of 3 hotel towers at Marina Bay Sands.

This 1.2 hectare tropical oasis is longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall and is large enough to park four and a half A380 Jumbo jets on. It extends to form one of the worlds largest public cantilevers.

I fell in love with the entire range, and only discovered today whilst flicking thru a old (2008) Monocle Magazine, that I have an entire range of Bottega Veneta furniture (2010 images featured) to ogle and obsess over.

The Blunt Umbrella by New Zealand designer Greig Brebner cleverly deals with the pointy (& potentially dangerous) end of the wet weather.

Cities and rain don’t go well together – something that Brebner found out when on working sabbatical in London. “The first day the rain arrived in London, it became obvious as to how prolific umbrellas are in a big city,” he explains. “I was quite astounded to find out how dangerous a mass of umbrellas can become with their sharp points at eye level.”

“For people to be so easily convinced that this design is a massive improvement on the old proves that this product has got huge potential.”

Centrally located in the cultural hub of Brisbane’s South Bank Precinct, Jan Manton Art neighbors the Queensland Art Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art. Since opening in 2004, Jan Manton Art has exhibited leading and contemporary artists from Australia and overseas, like US based artist, Stuart Allen, who’s stunning photographic works feature in our Kangaroo Point Apartment project.

What sets Jan Manton gallery apart from it’s competitors in Brisbane?

My gallery shows leading Australian and international artists, with a particular leaning toward Asian art. The market for Asian art is particular strong and I have many clients who are collecting Asian artists along side Australian art. Dadang Christanto and Heri Dono are two Indonesian artists who show regularly at my gallery as well as internationally. Their work is collected by private collectors here and overseas as well as galleries such as Queensland Art Gallery, Art Gallery of New South Wales and National Gallery in Canberra.

What would a typical day involve?

There is no such thing as a typical day as a Gallery Director. It can vary from taking a new consignment of works, to talking about art to a group of art students or showing visiting curators from interstate or overseas new works by one of my artists.

How international is your career?

My client list includes private collectors from Australia and overseas, with a focus on Asian art. I am building a strong client base in Indonesia, Hong Kong and Singapore as well as Dubai and even the US. Using the website, collectors are able to view and purchase on-line. I arrange transport and shipping and it make it a convenient way to buy art for overseas buyers, or even interstate buyers for that matter.

What percentage of your exhibited works are local Queensland artists?

I am a strong supporter of Queensland artists with half the artists I represent being from here. I have artists from Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns. Their work reflects the area they come from. For instance, works by the Cairns based artist Sam Tupou reflect his Samoan heritage and the relaxed and colourful life of living in Far North Queensland. Another artist from that region is Daniel Wallwork who creates slick sculptural works that reflect the highly polished duco surfaces of cars panels and the pin-strip details of big-rigs and car couture. Queensland has outstanding artists and I am proud to promote their work interstate and overseas.

How do you keep your mind and gallery fresh?

The wonderful thing about owning a gallery is the opportunity work with creative people. It is their creative energy that keeps me fresh of mind and makes the gallery an interesting place to visit. I enjoy sharing the creative process and seeing a work develop from concept to reality. It is what keeps me in this business.

What about your own art career?

I am a frustrated artist, who realized long ago, that I would never make it as an artist. The next best thing was to sell art, not make it!!

Thought i would share some of my favourite places to eat and absorb (from a recent trip) the Melbourne atmosphere.

Cutler and Co. ::great drinks and amazing food at Gertrude Street (and what a fitout).

The Melbourne Wine Room... i have been a regular diner for years now, and i have had some of the best food and wine of my life there.

The European is hybrid creation of European tastes and wines from all over ::interiors evoking old European traditions of style.

For those addicted to cupcakes...Little Cupcakes in Goldsbrough laneway. (::city) You will die and go to 'cc' heaven.

Industrial chic meets bakery heaven @ St. Kilda's Il Fornaio, great coffee and food.

Last but most certainly not least...The Melbourne Supper Club (161 Spring Street, City):: a visit to Melbourne without a drink (in particular on new roof terrace) is a crime.

When considering where to put what in a room, depending on the rooms purpose of course, what are the golden rules? You have to know the rules in order to break them, right?

Hi Claire

Thanks for your great question.

Figuring out where to place your furniture is a bit like trying to complete a jigsaw puzzle. Preparation is the key as it avoids you moving and dragging heavy furniture around around the room.

Create a scaled drawing of the room and then scaled cut-outs of the furniture you wish to place.

To make it easier, here are 4 rules that we follow when laying out a living area.

1. Create a U-Shaped Conversation Space

When arranging seating, a U-shaped conversation area is ideal. A matching pair of chairs will easily establish a comfortable U-shaped configuration that allows everyone who is seated to face everyone else.

2. Focus Attention to One Area

Almost every room has at least one natural focal point. If you have a fireplace or a window with a stunning view, that will be it. Whatever the focal point of your room, be sure you arrange your furniture to take advantage of it - since everyones eyes will naturally be drawn to it!

3. Think in Pairs

To create a great looking room, think in pairs. If you have a good piece without a mate, find it a partner.

4. Group Furniture Wisely

When you walk around your home, are you comfortable, or do you feel as if you are trying to navigate an obstacle course? Always try to configure seating so that someone 'passing through' can easily get to where they are going without interrupting the entire room.

Now that you know the rules, feel free to break them!

Teak and New Guinea Rose wood, oversized bold print and clean, simple lines pay tribute to a 'Mid-Century' aesthetic in our recent refurbishment of this Kangaroo Point river front apartment.

A light, architectural and structured hand was adopted for the design of this apartment, incorporating large areas of panelled walls, detailed timber ceiling features and designer lighting. Furnishings replicate the design framework with minimal lines and an uncomplicated spatial layout.

A built-in dining area with banquette seating, floor to ceiling cabinetry and a simple charcoal & white palette of hard finishes work together to provide an overall feeling of a space 'left open'.

Offline Brand Experiences...

Founded in 2010 Access Agency is a 'transformational creative ideas agency'.

Their point of difference is they desire to create memorable (talked about) experiences through an extreme mix of brand/product cross-marketing.

The attached images were a trial for NY Fashion Week with Burberry burgers, Hermes fries and Paul Smith soft serve.

Worth talking about...perhaps Phorm Interiors could mix Queensland interiors with A grade turf.

wow...light emitting wallpaper

Jonas Samson is a young designer from the Netherlands. He has invented the ultimate in home illumination – light emitting wallpaper.The wallpaper is constructed by "sandwiching" a number of layers together that combine to produce light. The back layer is a silver-based solution that conducts electricity, while the layer above this contains phosphorous pigments that light up. On top of this is a flexible, transparent ITO conductor layer, with regular wallpaper placed on top to act as the final, outwardly visual layer. When switched on, is a visually stunning wall-of-light that can be turned off and on, just like a regular light. A must-have for those who can afford it...after all we have bespoke custom furniture, designer products to suit all tastes and budgets, why not wallpaper that light up.
